Apr. 1st, 2006 10:59 amYou know, I always say that there's a huge difference in service in the city and outside the city... but I can't even blame this on that difference.
I went to Borders yesterday during my lunch break, looking for the novelization of Gravitation. I've seen it and never bothered to get it. (Of course, now that I actually wanted it, no one had it in stock, but we'll get back to that.) I know that the Borders I go to on Wall Street carries the book. I've seen it there. It hasn't been out long, so it's not like it's old and no one's buying it and they just dumped it because it's a space-waster or something. It wasn't on the shelf, so I went to the information desk to ask for it.
I got this guy, older, gray hair, with the type of face that looks like its owner couldn't really give a crap about you and what you're looking for. I asked him for the book, he looked it up in their system, and said it wasn't showing up. He said he was only getting the manga series, not the novel. I told him I've seen it there, and I checked Amazon's in-store pickup thing, and Wall Street showed up. Wall Street NEVER shows up, let me tell you. They never have anything when I'm actually looking at Amazon's in-store pickup page. So yes, they had it in stock. The guy wasn't buying it, though.
This is when the person is supposed to say, "Well, I can check in the back if you want," or "Would you like to order it, and we can hold it for you?". Everyone in my years of visiting any chain bookstore has said either or both of those statements. This guy did neither. That may be because the two of us had a mini-argument over whether or not that store carried the book, but still. I said thank you and walked back to the manga section to see if there was anything else I might want, and he said "Sorry!", and the tone he used... gah. Slap in the face? Yes please.
The trip to Borders ended up being a total waste of time. I went to Barnes & Noble to see if THEY had it, since I was already outside, and they didn't--but this time, the girl (much younger than the guy) checked the store room and ordered the book for me. I'll have it next week. I'm annoyed that I had to go there to get it, though... I never go down there anymore.
I'm thinking one of two things: Either the guy was stressed because that store was, after all, the Wall Street store and had a LOT of people in it at any given time, or he was just an old jerk who hated his job. The girl really seemed to like hers. (She also knew exactly what I was talking about. When I said I was looking for Gravitation, she immediately said, "The novelization?" The guy started asking me if there was anything graphic like sex or violence in it. 9_9;)
I had a dream the other night... It was related to RKA, but... I don't know. It was weird. ^^; I wrote down everything I remember at work yesterday.
Dad's in a mood, has been all morning. Grumpy old man. ^^;
