Exercises in futility
Apr. 20th, 2009 12:52 pmI downloaded Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann last year, I believe in the summer, with the intention to watch it. Never did. I finally decided to boot up the video ExHD on Friday evening to watch it.
The first bunch of files, I believe up to episode 19 or so, are MP4s, and they don't play properly. I first try them in Media Player Classic, which plays EVERYTHING, and it doesn't work. I try Quicktime, which gives me an "invalid sample" error, whatever the hell that is (have to look that up). I try it in Winamp, and get audio, but no video. I try it in Windows Media Player, and... I can't remember now. I think I get nothing.
So I find the MP4-to-AVI converter I downloaded at some point and start converting. It's going to take six million years and looks like crap. Right. SO, I get on Mininova and find a torrent, and set it off to download. Of course, this is the NYC connection, with Time Warner's crappy-assed no-way-into-it router, which means my connection's firewalled, which means I proceed to spend the next 41 hours downloading 6 gigs that could have been done in less than a day--a day tops--were I in PA.
I open the folder the newly-downloaded files are saved to. The first episode doesn't work. I check the file names between the new folder and the old. THEY'RE THE SAME FILES. My head goes ker-THUNK on my desk.
I come to work, and through browsing on TV Tropes, find out that the dub was running on Sci Fi, and is rerunning. I check the schedule. They're a good nine or ten episodes in by now. I'm now torn between waiting for DVDs (which I have to check on to see if they're even out) to rent from Netflix, trying to find another torrent of subs (and this time check the freaking files before downloading, which I should have done the first time), or just picking up where Sci Fi is now and catching the rest later. OR, waiting until the weekend and downloading at the house, because it's faster. I think I grew gray hairs this weekend.
Sigh. No fair, okay.
In other news: I bought today's special on HSN. Dad called me about it, or I wouldn't have seen it. Five payments of $80 works for me. I'm actually glad I held off on the other bundle, which (due to it being post-Craft Month) is down to 3 payments of $116 and would've cost me $17 just in shipping. This one'll ship up to the house and probably won't get there until 5/18, which means Dad will get to have fun with it first. ^^;
Want to go home. Supposed to be going to LaGuardia to give them a copy of my high school diploma, but it's rainy and suck and I'm not sure if I want to today. If the weather improves in the next three hours, I'll go. And then I'll stop by Camp Bow Wow to see what they're all about.
