I stood on the line outside the DMV for an hour, went upstairs, sat in the room with everyone else, just to be told I needed my social security card and date of birth. The only way around that is if you already have a permit. They won't accept a non-driver's ID as proof of your identity. They won't accept their own ID cards. I found out like this:
Woman: Take out your social security cards and your date of birth, or your permit. You must have your social security card. I want to see (blah blah blah)...
Me: I don't have my social security card.
Woman: No you didn't come here without the card.
And then she walked away from me. No "Oh, well you can't take the test without it, so you'll have to come back." Nothing.
Oh, hello, snotty bitch. If I was anywhere near as assertive as Mom, I'd have said (instead of thought) "Uh, apparently, I did."
So I had to leave without taking the test. Needless to say, I got to work on time, but in a very bad mood. That said, I'm so glad Jo understands how I am when I'm angry. I don't talk. I start talking when I start feeling better. Other people will try to talk to me, but she just waits it out because she knows I'll get over it. I've never been silent an entire day.
I'm going back tomorrow, with the card, and if that woman recognizes me (though I'm sure she sees hundreds of people a day, so she probably won't) and says something, I'm just going to give her a dirty look. Will probably leave work early tomorrow, since I'll already have to charge time and will not feel like being at work all day. It'll be nice starting a three-day weekend early.
