Guess what?
Jun. 19th, 2011 02:44 pmWe're getting a kitten.
Mom's decided she's done with dealing with the mice and the poison and the carcasses. We're gonna go get one sometime after the 4th of July. I'm all happy now, but I'll only have a couple of months with it before I have to go away! I'm curious how Oliver will handle it. I told Mom we should bring him with us to make sure there's no animosity between them.
I'm resisting the urge to say "told you so". XD Whatever, I'm just glad we're getting one!
ANYWAY, back to other stuff!
The orientation at Juniata was a lot of fun. I ended up doing the writing for the College Writing Seminar prompt and registering for a CWS class, even though I may not actually have to take it. I'll hopefully get a decision on that soon. If I don't have to, I'm going to replace it with Survey of Western Art. Finally got to meet Bethany Benson, my advisor and the ceramics/3D art professor at the school. She's cool. She kind of seems like she has a sarcastic, laid-back way about her, and it was easy to talk to her. She showed me a few of the projects from her Book Arts class, which were out on the table, and assured me that she thinks I can handle taking both Quantitative Methods (a math class that it's been suggested online that you take if you don't like math, because by taking QM you only need to take one class rather than two) and Computer Science I in the same semester. I want to get them out of the way, you know? I have to take six credits in science, and I'm starting off with Computer Science because I think I can handle that. I'm still a little wary of taking things like bio and chem at this school. It's a science school, you know? I haven't taken bio in years, and I've never touched chemistry. Anyway, the teacher for CS is supposed to be great, and I'm looking for people that'll help me out if I need it.
A few people got to campus a day early, and I met a girl named Polly (Paola, but she hates going by her full name so much that she kept scratching it out and writing "Polly" on things that would be seen publically, like her nametag and her room sign XD) from Florida (originally from Colombia), like 30 minutes from Orlando. She understands the way I am about New York because she's the same about Orlando/Disney World/all that. XDD The first morning, since orientation didn't actually start until 11am, she and I walked to these cliffs she found. REALLY nice view. Nice place to go with a loved one or just to relax.
We headed back and ended up hanging out for a good part of the day (except when we were split up into different groups) with Elizabeth, a girl that was actually sitting right behind me on the train, from Connecticut (but originally from... Ecuador? Slipping my mind right now). Found out about clubs and stuff (animal welfare group! Yay!), then there was a session on academics and how to succeed at the school. We filled out questionnaires about how prepared we thought we were for school, what our interests were, how we think we do in certain subjects. At that point, we split up for an info session on accessing various applications at the school--mail, course registration, etc.--and registered for classes. At the moment, I have 17 credits: Two of those are 1-credit courses, and one of them, I can get done early and maybe never have to go back to. ^_^
We went for dinner, and all met up outside Ellis Hall to walk to the Peace Chapel. There was no actual chapel, and I'm not sure there ever was or if it's just called that. It was a circle of stones large enough to sit on, with a sort of pit in the middle that looked like it'd be good for bonfires. We played a game that involved a lot of running, haha. One person stood in the center of the circle while everyone else was sitting down. That person had to introduce themselves and say something. If anyone agreed, they had to get up and run to the opposite side of the circle. Last person standing was in the middle. That was me at one point. XD;; I said "I play video games!" and practically the whole circle ran. Afterwards we had popcicles while we watched the orientation leaders (current students) perform three skits to educate us on campus life, specifically issues with roommates, stress, and underage drinking. They were hilarious. I wish I'd thought to whip out the camera and film them.
We walked back down to the school, where we broke up once again to do our writing samples (on those idiots at the Westboro Baptist Church and the Supreme Court ruling like three months ago that the picketing at fallen soldiers' funerals was constitutionally protected). Had a bit of free time, then went to the orientation social. Didn't stay the whole time, but I only left ten minutes early, so whatever. I was really tired by that point and just wanted to sleep.
In the morning I got to talk with my roommate (just for orientation, not for the semester, don't know who that is yet) for a few minutes. The very first thing she did when she woke up, after brushing her teeth, was start doing her hair and makeup. Like, ooooookay. Polar opposites, she and I. She was very into her looks. She seemed nice, though, for the few minutes I talked to her. She woke up at 6:30, but I wasn't really ready to be up yet, so I went back to sleep, and I didn't see her again before I had to go. Had breakfast, went to my advisement appointment, and went back to Ellis Hall to drop off my room key. Everyone that had to go back to the train met up at Ellis, and that was that.
All in all, really enjoyed my time there, and can't wait to start.
