So I develop a crush on a guy I admittedly haven't known for very long, and Sophie comes back from hanging out with friends to tell me that one of the friends was in an abusive relationship with the dude.

Sigh. Try to move on, get shot down.

Yeah. I mean, I'm glad she told me, I'm just kind of bummed about it. He's cute and funny. Seems like such a waste.

Hmph. I bet he uses that charming personality of his to his advantage. Not only would it attract a nice woman, but there's also the possibility that nobody'd ever believe her when she'd try to get help from her friends. At least you found out before getting emotionally invested. :( There is someone out there for you!

Like vanish said, manipulators are charming as hell. But I will agree it's a super huge waste. You deserve someone who's legitimately awesome, though. Just keep being yourself and you'll find them /old lady advice
