Went to the shelter today. Just one guy was there, a guy named Ed, and he was just finishing up cleaning the cats' cages, so we chatted while he worked (he wouldn't let me help, but he was nearly done), and then we sat and played with the cats. He's been with Ollie's Place for four years and actually adopted a cat from there.
The one I fell in love with, Sunshine, may already have a place soon. Still, I'm glad I got a chance to meet her. As soon as I sat on the floor, she came over and plopped herself down in my lap. She was so adorable. Ed warned me that she'd be very content to just sit on me for two or three hours, hehe. I eventually picked her up and walked around to meet the other cats... and when I sat back down, a white 5-6-month-old, Nevada, crawled up into my lap (I think he got a little jealous of Sunshine) and started nibbling on the tassles of my sweater. He's really cute, too. He has gold eyes--not yellow--and he's a sweetheart. There are quite a few cats there that are really sweet. Balky's another one I liked... and a good few of the cats liked sitting on my lap. There's a set of two brothers, and while one (Bruno) is incredibly shy and doesn't really come out of his cage, his brother Solomon likes to walk around and I found him on my lap a good few times. He likes digging his claws in, too. XD;;; Still, I liked him, and I hope to get Bruno to warm up a bit, too, because he seems like a sweet cat. They definitely would have been adopted by now, but they need to be adopted together, because Solomon is very much Bruno's protector and Bruno would be lost without his brother.
And there are four brown tabbies that look nearly exactly like each other... and only two are related. XD Writing this to cement it in my head: Andy has spots, Edgar has a crinkly right ear, Ollie has a thick tail, and his sister Fran has a thin tail. Also, I think Fran knows her name, haha. A couple times I called her name and she came right over. She and Edgar are the easier of the four to tell apart: With Ollie and Andy, you have to look closely at their fur to see which has stripes and which has spots.
I like that place. It's not far from work (as long as the 6 is running, otherwise I'd have to find another way there), and the cats are awesome. There are a couple that aren't as social, and I've been warned that Lena is a biter and actually sent someone to the hospital with a pretty nasty bite, but most of them are great, and Lena pretty much stays by herself anyway, it seems. There are a few cats that like to keep to themselves, though most of them let me pet them. Even Lena let me pet her a bit. I didn't push it, just rubbed behind her ears a bit.
So yeah, I'll definitely be going back. I'm apparently not the only one that gets their cat fix through volunteering there, either. ^_^ I walked out of that place covered in fur and happy.
