Yeah. I just have to work through it. That's all I can do.

I'll be fine.

Thank you.

meitantei_cj: (Don't ask me... I wish I knew.)

Bad news: I spent today in a miserable funk (the underlying headache and allergy issues were not helping), and I've come home to find a couple friends dealing in some way with cancer  (not personally, thank goodness, but all the same...) and general family/friend issues, and one with pet loss. Today kind of sucks, doesn't it?

Good news: Tony (from England) sent me a birthday message today on LJ. I got to view the whole thing at work, even though I couldn't reply because the filters at work won't let me and my phone can't log into LJ. It made me smile a genuine smile in a day of faking it. I sent him a message, but I don't know when/if he'll reply. It's kinda late over there.

--------------------------------

The furloughs will not affect me. For one thing, no employee is allowed to have more than a 20% cut in any pay period, and since I'm already cutting myself back 20%, the furlough skips over me. For the other thing, the eligible furlough days are Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday (of course), so I would have just used Thursday as my day, and it would have canceled out.

Of course, Management/Confidential employees (AKA, the boss) are exempt from the furlough, which means the boss will make sure he's in every day next week just to irritate me. That's if the furloughs even happen. The legislature might actually get off their asses and do something. (By the way, gov, I'd like my raise now. A step in pay is nice, but there should be more money in my paycheck. And, you know, cutting out a fifth of my salary is stinging a bit.)

I don't think I'll be able to get out of school by Spring 2011. I'll still have 33 credits (11 classes) to get after this summer's courses are done. Even if I went full-time, that would mean four classes in the 12-week session and two in the 6-week, both semesters (and actually, I wouldn't graduate until September 2011 because I'd still be taking a course in the summer), while working... and one of them would be an internship if I went through with it. And two of the classes are history and science, which I would not be able to just sail through. And I'd be taking classes after work, because as much as I love having a day (or the equivalent) off a week, I'm sacrificing $200 a paycheck for it, and I'd really like my money back. I'd burn myself out. Severely. This realization does not make me happy, but barring getting lucky with money, there's no other way around it. I'll have to stick around longer.

Dona was browsing a website called SchoolMatters for the reading and math testing scores (and, by the way, the schools in this city SUCK), and I got curious about my own schools' scores.

P.S. 250 George H. Lindsey School
PreK-5
Reading: 64.9%; Math: 77.9%

J.H.S. 318 Eugenio Maria DeHostos School
(which, apparently, is no longer called I.S. 318...)
6-8
Reading: 61.6%; Math: 62.3%

Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School
(which used to have the longest name EVER due to them combining two schools... they call it LaGuardia Arts now, possibly because of the ridiculously-lengthy name (though it's still on the website), and partially because whenever someone said they attended LaGuardia, people were dumb enough to go "in Queens?" despite the fact that Queens LaGuardia is a community college, and EVERYONE knows that)
9-12
Reading: 96.7%; Math: 96.9%

... So at least high school's still doing well. Though, I can't really expect less since there's an audition process. And you know something? The scores from the earlier schools aren't even BAD compared to what's in this city. We're talking 40s, 30s, 20s, even SINGLE DIGIT percentages. Most of them seem to be in middle school.

ANYWAY, the real reason I'm posting this, other than to remember the name of the website so I can show it to Craig (as in, "THIS is why you don't go to school in New York. Remember that."), is that I was looking at the faculty lists to see if there are any teachers still there that I had.

Dr. Rowes (DOCTOR Rowes. If you didn't call her doctor, she made the biggest deal out if it.) is still there. XD She wasn't bad if you were on her good side. She WAS the very first teacher I ever encountered that locked the door at the late bell. Stood by the door and waited for the late bell. And of course, my school had me going to her classroom on the sixth floor from a music class in the basement. Har har. She loosened up once I told her. Still, I think that's how I stayed so freaking thin in high school. We had escalators, but they were narrow, people didn't want to walk, and more than half the time some idiot would press the button and shut them off. It was easier taking the stairwells. I wonder if she's still as mean as everyone wanted us to think she was?

Mrs. Santiago and Mr. Fogel are still there, too. (And Mr. Smith and Mrs. Washington, but ew, no. Although, Mr. Smith WAS responsible for my getting to learn electric bass for a semester, which was fun.) I kind of wish I could go visit, but... eh. All of a sudden I'm reminded of the feeling I had when Michael called me about the reunion. I didn't go. I hadn't done anything with my life and didn't want to be THAT PERSON.

I couldn't go visit anyway. Seems like every year I graduated from a school, that was the year the school decided to ban ex-student "HI!" visits. LaGuardia actually required us to have an appointment to see Mr. Trevor and Mrs. Santiago. -_-;

Going home after work, and may not be going to the house at all, depending on what happens. Almost three hours for that. Ready to go now, please. And may the gods of lottery shine their light on me. I have a feeling the budget crunch in this agency is going to get a LOT worse, and I'd really rather not be around when things start blowing up. ^^;

Yay, rambling.

And now I go to order supplies. Probably three separate orders. And Denise will probably tell me I can't order all the toner I want and make me get a pricing quote from CDW-G, which is just as expensive as Staples, if not more so. YAY. -_-
